With my oldest going into middle school and my youngest now going into 4th grade, my goal is to make this be the best summer ever as I don't know how much more my oldest will want to "hang" with his parents.
So far our first week was eventful as my oldest had a birthday party on Monday to go to and my youngest had one on Tuesday to go to! Both nights we ended up going to karate as we were going to be leaving on Wednesday to go up to Ludington State Park! We tend to go there every year boating, tubing, and swimming, but this is the first time we were going to go camping. The only reason why we were actually able to camp was due to they ended up having their mini cabin open Wednesday and Thursday so we were able to reserve that!
If you've never been to Ludington State Park let me say you are missing out as there is so much to do there. On one side of the park you have Lake Michigan with miles of beach so you don't have to be on a crowded beach! On the other side of the park is Hamlin Lake and they do have a boat ramp so if you have your own boat/ski doo you can bring that and have fun flying around on the lake! All the times we have gone, Hamlin Lake has never seemed really busy. What people do a lot of the time is take their boats and beach them by the sand dunes and just enjoy a quiet get away from all the people. There are also a lot of great fishing spots on Hamlin Lake as well. My son learned all about them this year. Usually when we go we don't get up there until afternoon and we spend most of the time tubing and swimming. Since we were camping this time and had more time my husband took my son fishing and they had the best time ever. First they started fishing around (and on) the dam and then they went and got the boat and both locations they were catching a lot of Bluegill and Bass and my son was bummed when it got dark and they had to go in. Put it this way.. he woke us up at 5am to see if it was time to go fishing yet as he couldn't wait to get back out. ;) So even if you don't have a boat, you can still fish along the river from Hamlin Lake to Lake Michigan.
While the boys were busy fishing, my daughter and I went on some walks. If you like hiking and bike riding, then this is also the place for you as they have trails all over! While on our walk we saw quite a bit of wild life, but the best was seeing a Momma deer and her baby and the fun thing was she wasn't to far off the path either and we got to just stand there and enjoy watching them. We also walked down to Lake Michigan to watch the sunset, but unfortunately the clouds rolled in and the following day all it did was rain pretty much all day.
Thankfully we were able to go fishing for a little while in the morning before the rain started, so that made the kids a little happy, but the rain sure put a damper on things as there was so much I wanted to do there. It did break a little bit in the late afternoon so the kids could go out one last time.
So even though it rained half the time we were there, we wouldn't of traded going up there for anything! I now know to keep an eye on their calendar so in case I see a mini cabin open again due to a cancellation, I can reserve it as I know all of us can't wait to go back up there. Next year we for sure be trying to get a week up there and we all can't wait!
